How to create a Facebook Business page
In this post, I want to show you, not only how to create a Facebook business page for your business, but how to do it the right way.
I have seen so many Facebook business pages out there, where small and big businesses have opened pages, but they are not getting any traffic due to the way they have set up their pages, as well as the incorrect way that they are running them.
Setting up your Facebook business page the right way could take you about 45 min by using the information I am about to share with you in this post.
So, let’s get this show on the road.

Step 1: Create your Facebook Business page
To open your Facebook business page, you will need to go to Facebook Business, you can click on this link to go directly there, then click the small “drop down”, and the Create a Page will come up. Also, note that you should be logged in to your personal Facebook page when doing so.

Step 2: Select the type of Facebook page you want to create
You need to now select “next” if you are creating a Facebook business page, a Facebook community, or a public figure page.
Once you have selected the “Get Started” button, you will be asked to complete some basic information.
Ad in your business name, which category your business will be categorized in, as well as your business address.
You can also select “hide” the business address if you don’t want it to show up on your page.
Once you have completed all the needed information, you can now click on the ‘continue’ button at the bottom of the page. You will then be taken to your new Facebook business page.
Congratulations, that was not so hard, was it?
Step 3: Optimizing your Facebook Business page the right way
In step 3 you are going to need to do something very important. Please note this simple, yet very important step is where most people who open Facebook business pages go wrong.
You are going to want to change your username. This will help Facebook, and people searching for ‘what you do…’, find you a lot easier. This has got to do with ‘keywords.’ Very Important!

When you create your Facebook business page, your URL at the top of the search bar will look something like the image below…
We need to change this, and I will show you how.
Can you see the long number at the end?
What we want our page to have is its own dedicated username and not some long Facebook ID number. See the correct example in the image below here.
So, how do we change our Facebook username?
First, you need to navigate to your “About Us” tab, located to the left of your page and click on it.
Next, you will see, in the middle of your page, what your current user name is. I want you to click on Change Your Username. You can come back later and update all the other outstanding information, let’s just do this first before we move on.
When adding a username, all names might not be available, so you might have to be a little creative with your username. Just remember that your “keywords” should always be inside of it.
As you can see in the image below, I have used my keywords (Digital + Marketing + Strategies + Projects)
Step 4: Changing your Facebook profile image and your cover photo with the correct sizes
Facebook’s image sizes are constantly changing, and it can be a real challenge to keep re-adjusting all your photos to match the sizes that Facebook is looking for.
I will recommend using Canva.com to help you create and cut your images to the right size. You can read more about using canva.com for your branding, in my branding blog post.
Let’s have a look at your “profile image” size first
At this moment Facebook is accepting a profile photo of 170 x 170 px, but I have found that if I create an image of 500 x 500 px, and then “scale” it down when I upload it to Facebook, I still get a great quality photo.
To change your Facebook business page profile photo, navigate to the profile photo, and click on change photo.
Next, let’s do the Facebook business page “cover” photo size and upload
Your cover photo is like your main billboard. This large piece of “real estate” can really help your Facebook business page build brand awareness, as well as get people to ‘act’ on your call to action under the banner.

So, to help you get the size right and help you to design a beautiful Facebook cover image, remember to use Canva.com, which is a free online system, and can make your life so much easier!
What should the size of this cover image be?
Right now, Facebook has allowed us to use a cover size of 820 x 312 px, so, navigate to your canva.com account and cut this image to those sizes. Then click on the ‘upload new cover image’ on your Facebook page. See the image below.
Once you have uploaded your profile photo and your cover photo, your page should start to look something like the image below. But hang on, we are not done yet!
Step 5: Completing all your Facebook business page information
Next, you are going to add all the missing information to your Facebook business page, from your website link to your about us information, your business contact number, address, etc
The more information you give Facebook about your business page, the better your page will do, so please do not skip this section.
Let’s have a look at your Facebook story first
In this section I want you to add your story. You could use the same information that you have on your website. One key thing to remember is that you should use your keywords in your content.
Navigate to your “About” page, and you will find the “Our Story” tab. Click on the link and update your Facebook story section. Do not forget to add your cover image. You can design a new cover image for this section if you want to, or use the same one that you’ve designed for your front page.

Next, let’s do your short Facebook page description
I know that I am sounding like a bit of a broken record here, but this short description is very important.
I have worked with a lot of small businesses that have not added their Facebook short descriptions, and then they wonder why people are not finding their Facebook business pages.
So, to understand why this is so important let’s have a look at the Google search engine quickly, and I will explain it to you.
Search Engine Ranking
When people use search engines like Google, Bing or Yahoo and type in their business name, or even what they do as a business, would like to at least start to rank in the search engines. But if we don’t add in our Meta descriptions and keywords, the search engines will not know who we are, or what we do as a business. So how can they display our Facebook business page to people if they don’t know what we do?
Below I have added a quick search for The Learning Tree Facebook business page, you can see how it displays in Google’s search engine.
Next, I want you to navigate to your “About Us” section on your Facebook page, and complete this step. Remember to add in your keywords, as you can see in the image above, it shows where your keywords will display in the search engines, I have marked them with an orange block.
Now that you have added your “About Us” to your Facebook business page, we are going to look at the Facebook “Call to Action” button for your Facebook business page.
Step 6: Adding your Facebook business page’s “Call to Action”
Every Facebook business page comes with an option to add a “Call to Action”, short, known as your CTA.
CTA’s are buttons that allow your prospects to contact you, sign up for a free offer, or even call you. There is a wide range of different options you can choose from. I personally like to send people to a dedicated website page known as a landing page, which helps our businesses gain new leads and customers.
So, next, I want you to locate your “Call to Action” button, and pick what you would like your prospects to do when they land on your Facebook business page.

Next, select what action you would like your prospect to take when they land on your Facebook page.
Step 7: Picking the right template for your Facebook business page
Next, you are going to want to select a template for your Facebook page. This will change the layout of your page a little. It helps the user experience your page, in a more user-friendly way that relates to what you do as a business.
Navigate to your Facebook settings tab, which can be found at the “top right-hand side” of your Facebook page. See the image below on where to go.
Once you have clicked on your Facebook settings tab, you will now see a page from where you can click on the “Templates” and “Tabs”, on the right-hand side of your page.
Next, click on the edit button you see in the image above. You will see a “popup”, that will give you different options from where you can select the different layouts.
Select the industry and layout that fits your business best.
Congratulations, you are on the right road! Your Facebook business page should really be coming along nicely by now. Your Facebook business page has been set up in a way that can be found by prospects. Their browsing will lead them to be interested in what you have to offer.
But wait, we have one more step to do…
Before we can invite any of our friends to come and see what we have created, content needs to be posted.
Let’s not invite them all to come like or follow our “empty” page!

Step 8: Posting content to your Facebook business page
You might find yourself wondering…
Now, what, I don’t exactly have any content right now. What should I do?
So, what I want you to do is this…
Find Facebook business pages or websites that are in the same industry as you are, copy their URLs, and post them on your own Facebook business page.
Trust me, they will love you for doing this!
Look at this!
You also give your friends and family something to look at, while you grow and reach more people. Allowing them to decide whether to follow your page. So why not give them something interesting to look at?
In the image below, I will share a post from my personal Facebook page Jean-Pierre Ras, to give you an example.
As you can see, all I did was copy the Jean-Pierre Ras URL link from a different page and place it into the “Create a Post” section of my Digital Marketing Project’s Facebook page. I gave it about 10-20 seconds to automatically add in the image. Then I added a short write-up about this page.
Once that was done…
I hit the publish button, and it was done!
BOOM! How easy was that!?!
Next, I want you to do this for your own page. Add at least 5 – 8 posts to your news feed. Then go and invite your friends and family to follow your page.
